Crystal Ball checks covered

SITE_DUPLICATE_META_DESCRIPTION, duplicate meta descriptions, repeated descriptions

What the flag means

Crystal Ball flags duplicate meta descriptions when several pages use the same summary. Meta descriptions do not guarantee rankings, and search engines may rewrite snippets, but they still help explain pages to humans.

This is a problem because different pages deserve different previews. A copied description can make service pages, product pages, and location pages blur together in the crystal ball.

Common causes

Common causes include copied pages, default SEO plugin settings, product templates, collection pages, service-area pages, auto-generated excerpts, and old homepage descriptions reused during a rebuild.

How to fix it

  • Custom HTML/static: Edit each page’s <meta name="description"> so it summarizes that exact page. Avoid copying the homepage description everywhere.
  • WordPress: Use the meta description field on important pages and check SEO plugin templates for archives or custom post types. Auto-generated excerpts can still repeat.
  • Shopify: Update search engine listing descriptions for important products, collections, pages, and blogs. For large catalogs, prioritize top products and collection pages first.
  • Wix: Edit page descriptions in SEO Basics and review default SEO settings. Do not use one sitewide description for every service page.
  • Webflow: Use page SEO settings or CMS fields for descriptions. Collection pages should pull from a short summary field, not one fixed template sentence.
