AI Search Education

AI search adds new ways for content to be retrieved and cited, but it does not repeal the ordinary laws of useful pages, crawl access, and evidence.

## What Answer Readiness means

Answer Readiness is Crystal Ball's transparent heuristic for whether page content is clear, extractable, specific, and supported enough to answer likely questions. It is not a prediction that any provider will cite the page.

- The rubric reviews content clarity, structure, factual context, entity cues, and trust signals.
- A high score means the page is easier to understand and verify under the rubric.
- Citation outcomes still depend on eligibility, relevance, provider behavior, competing sources, and the question.

## Grounding, citations, and rankings

Grounding is the retrieval of source material used to support an AI-generated response. A citation is a visible reference or link attached to that response. A ranking orders search results; a citation shows source use in a particular answer.

- A page can rank without being cited in a generated answer.
- A page can be cited for a narrow question without holding a top traditional ranking for a broad query.
- Citation reports measure observed source use, not authority, importance, or guaranteed traffic.

## AEO, GEO, and ordinary SEO

AEO and GEO are industry labels for improving content's usefulness in answer engines and generative search. The practical work overlaps heavily with strong SEO: crawlability, indexability, clear language, trustworthy evidence, useful structure, and consistent entities.

- The labels can help organize a workflow, but they are not separate laws of the web.
- Do not add invented facts, keyword-stuffed FAQs, or unsupported schema in the name of AI visibility.
- Measure search performance and citation evidence separately.

## What Google currently requires

Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode use the same foundational SEO best practices as Google Search and have no additional technical requirements beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet.

- Google says no new machine-readable AI files are required.
- Google says no special schema.org markup is required for these features.
- Robots.txt, noindex, nosnippet, and other established controls still matter in their documented roles.

## FAQ

Does a high Answer Readiness score predict citations? No. It indicates that a page meets more of Crystal Ball's content-clarity and evidence heuristics. It does not model a provider's future citation choice.

Do I need llms.txt to appear in Google AI Overviews? No. Google explicitly says no new machine-readable files or AI text files are required for AI Overviews or AI Mode.

Is GEO completely separate from SEO?Not in practical implementation. Most durable GEO work is strong technical SEO, clear content, reliable evidence, and consistent entity information applied to answer-oriented queries.
