Never let your Internet domain registration expire. You need to know who owns it. This is your domain name, such as yourseowizard.com, yahoo.com or yelp.com.  This is the foundation of your SEO campaigns. Your SEO company will need this to generate more business for you. You do not own your Internet domain. You merely rent one, like renting a car. You also need to keep track of your domain name, where you registered it and when it expires. Grab a pen and a piece of paper. Let’s tackle these tasks one at a time.

Domain name

If you’re running a business or an organization, you probably have at least one Internet domain name. I personally manage seven for my SEO company and more than 10 for clients. This is the domain name you use when sending people to your web site or promoting an e-mail address. Using one of my SEO company domains as an example, you can send people to www.yourseowizard.com or tell them to send e-mail to mark@yourseowizard.com. These work because I have registered yourseowizard.com. If you’re not sure about your domain, just look at your business card or ask what e-mail address you use.

Registrar

If you have a domain name, you have registered it somewhere. Domains typically cost $13/year. I have seen big discounts for the first year and for domains that end with unusual suffixes, such as .BIZ, .US and .INFO.  Registrars let you register and renew domains. Some big names include Godaddy, Network Solutions and Yahoo. Domain registrations are a commodity. You can shop around. Your SEO company recommends using one service for all your registrations. That will make life easier when it becomes time to renew one or more of yours.

Expiration

You register a domain for one year, two years, or any number of years up to 10 years.  There usually is not a discount when renewing for multiple years. Make sure you keep track of when your domain(s) expire. Never let a domain expire. You never know when someone will pick up and old business card and visit the web site printed on it. I am always amazed how often I find my business card from 2002 on clients’ desks.

Scenarios

If you let a domain expire, you may be in trouble. Under the least painful scenario:

  1. You stop receiving e-mail.
  2. Your web site no longer appears.
  3. You call the registrar, only to learn the domain registration expired.
  4. You pay a reactivation fee and everything works again.

Count your blessings if this happens. Let us explore the worst-case scenario. Fasten your seat belt:

  1. You stop receiving e-mail.
  2. You try visiting your web site and instead get forwarded to a competitor.
  3. You call the registrar. They inform you someone else has registered the domain. That someone else is a competitor.

SEO company says it is outside your control

Under this scenario, you neglected your domain. A competitor registered it and took your Internet presence. You may never get it back. You can ask the competitor to sell you your domain back. They might say yes. They might laugh and hang up the phone.

This is where the pen and paper come in handy.  You can visit one of the popular registrars and perform a WHOIS lookup for your domain. This will tell you the Registrar, who registered it and the expiration date. Put this info in your notes. Go to that registrar. Try logging in with your usual e-mail address and password. Make sure you can successfully login now, while the registration is still valid.

You can also create a Calendar reminder with this information. Whatever tool you choose, make sure you never let a domain registration expire. You could end up abandoning your Internet presence and never getting it back.
