9 tips to increase your online branding. Today: tip 7 of 9
Welcome to Branding Week! We are nearing the finish line. I am creating posts centered on branding and posting them daily. Branding is crucial now more than ever. Your competitors are local, national and international. You compete on the Internet stage. Someone can find you and learn you are 10 minutes away. Someone can find a vendor in your profession and learn they are 10 time zones away! That vendor may be your competitor. Your job is to show the prospect you are uniquely able to provide the products and services they need. They need to hire you and only you.
Branding tip 7
You need your own domain and blog. When I say domain, I am referring to an Internet name that points to a specific address. Some popular domains are cnn.com, msn.com and google.com. They all point to an address that your Internet web browser can find and render its content for you.
You can reserve a domain from one of several providers. The usual price is $15/year. I have seen big discounts for first year registrations. You can visit GoDaddy or Network Solutions to see if your name is available. Yes, you should reserve an Internet domain name. Reserve it before someone else does. I have reserved markanthonygermanos.com for that reason. If you already have a domain in your name, maintain the registration. Never let a domain registration expire. You never know when someone will read an e-mail you wrote five years ago and click a link, expecting to view your website.
You should also set up a blog. After registering a domain name, hire a hosting company to host the blog. Basic packages start at $10/month and include WordPress blog capabilities. A blog meets the definition of a website and lets visitors contribute content quickly and easily. I have found my blogs easier to update than static websites. One of my favorites is one of mine, at http://yourseowizard.com. Enjoy.
